GEDI wins Jean Pictet Competition
Members of the UFMG Law School International Law Society (GEDI) won the first place at the 20th edition of the Jean Pictet Competition on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) , held between April 19 and 26 in Schwarzenburg, Switzerland. Ana Luiza Calixto Rodrigues, Diego Valadares Vasconcelos Neto and Monique Salerno Lisboa, members of the GEDI-Humanitario (GEDI's section on IHL). The students remain in Europe until late May, when they shall take place on another IHL competition, this time in Belarus.
The Brazilian students competed with teams from other 56 Universities from 48 countries. According to Diego Vasconcelos, this is the first time a University from a Portuguese speaking country wins a International competition on International Law. The team competed in English against native speaking participants and students from American, European, African and Asian universities.
According to the rules of the competition, mock situations are presented to the teams, and each has between 15 minutes and 2 hours to prepare itself for presenting its case before jury members and/or opposing teams. Competitors can be requested, for example, to play the role of legal consultants of a country in an international armed conflict, representatives of the Red Cross, members of invading army or members of an NGO.
The competition is supported by the International Committee of the Red Cross, several Red Cross Societies, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland and other institutions. For more informations visit http://www.concourspictet.org
